Tent Ban in North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach & Horry County

Earlier this year a tent ban was passed covering all of Horry County, including Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, which bans any tent or tent-like object on our beaches. Dates for the ban vary by location, as does the definition of acceptable umbrellas and violation procedures, so to help all our guests understand what is and isn’t allowed, we broke it down by area.

North Myrtle Beach (including Cherry Grove Beach)

Effective Ban Dates: May 15-September 15 of each year

Permitted Umbrellas: Center pole no larger than 7 feet, 6 inches tall and a circular canopy diameter no larger than a 9 foot diameter.

Violations: Verbal warning; if necessary, a misdemeanor charge, which is up to a $500 fine and/or up to 30 days in jail.

Myrtle Beach

Effective Ban Dates: Memorial Day-Labor Day of each year

Permitted Umbrellas: Circular canopy diameter no larger than 7 feet, 6 inches

Violations: Verbal warning; According to Mark Kruea, spokesman for Myrtle Beach, the court has set $262 as the standard bond amount, or fine, for a tent violation, which includes court costs.

Horry County

Effective Ban Dates: Year-round, ban started April 16, 2014

Permitted Umbrellas: Circular canopy diameter no larger than 7 feet, 6 inches. An umbrella is defined as a collapsible circular shade consisting of a natural or synthetic fabric shade stretched over hinged ribs radiating from a central pole without grounding lines or ropes. All shading devices are prohibited from being tied, bound, joined, or connected in any manner, but otherwise shall be secured in such fashion to restrict uncontrolled movement of the device.

Violations: After notifying the public, if needed, a citation can be given for up to $225.

If you aren’t sure if the area you are sunbathing in is part of Myrtle Beach or North Myrtle Beach, the best thing is to make sure you are only using a circular umbrella with a diameter less than 7.5 feet. Don’t have an umbrella? You can rent one from the City of North Myrtle Beach! They offer both daily and weekly rates starting at $15 for a full day umbrella rental and $90 for the week. You can visit their site or call them at (843) 280-5684.
